Derrick

Derrick Nelson is a proud high school graduate from Malcolm X Shabazz. He comes from a West African background. Both of his parents migrated from Ghana into the United States of America granting Derrick and his siblings the chance to make something good out of themselves. Moreover, he was the first in his family to graduate top 10! He received multiple scholarships but the biggest scholarship that he received came from the Chad School Foundation Inc. After graduation and with the help of The Chad School Foundation, Derrick took his scarce talents to Montclair State University. He’s currently an English Major with a concentration geared towards Teacher education. His goal in life is to nurture the youth with knowledge that’ll lead them along the lines of success.

Derrick is also into modeling as well as fashion.

Derrick is currently working with 7th grade boys at Peshine Avenue Brick Academy. THREADS is an acronym that stands for Truth, Honor, Respect, And Development of Self. Every Thursday, Derrick goes to Newark with his peers to instill this acronym into the minds of the young men. He personally believes that he can make an impact on the lives of these young men because he also came from the same environment. He lives by this quote “Your surroundings do not define who you are or who you’ll be come, you do!”
